 CANON XF305 AND XF300

Good news. Canon has finally released an update for XF UTILITY that addresses the archiving issues that I brought to their attention and talked about in my XF305/300 training DVD. No longer do "CONTENTS" folders need to be located in the root directory of a storage device. You can now store a "CONTENTS" folder anywhere on your computer (including external hard drives and discs) and then tell XF Utility where to find that footage. XF Utility will remember the path to that "CONTENTS" folder every time you open the program. If you move a "CONTENTS" folder someplace else, you can easily re-connect to it at the new location. Obviously, this is very basic function that should have been included in version 1.0 of the software.
The new menu command that allows you to navigate to the location of a "CONTENTS" folder is called:
File > Set Virtual Media
NOTE: To install the v1.1.0 update you must already have XF Utility 1.0 (located on the
Canon XF Utilities Disc that came with your camera) installed on your computer.
1. Download "xum-1-1-0-1-8l.dmg.gz" from the download page.
2. Decompress "xum-1-1-0-1-8l.dmg.gz" on the computer to create the "XUM_1_1_0_1_8L.dmg" file.
3. Double-click "XUM_1_1_0_1_8L.dmg", and double-click the "UpdateInstaller" file in the auto-mounted disk image "XUM11" .
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Apple has released an update for Final Cut Pro (7.0.3) that improves compatibility with 720P footage. You can now use FCP's "Log & Transfer" function to import 720P footage natively instead of transcoding as ProRes clips. This is different than what I say in chapter 23 of the XF305/300 training DVD. However, you still cannot edit those native clips in FCP without rendering. That is because there is still no Sequence Preset that matches the "Canon XF MPEG2" codec that Canon uses for 720P 50Mbps clips.
